When it comes to helping reduce the amount of blog comment spam, the nofollow tag is useless. In fact I’ve even argued that removing the nofollow tag can actually help your blog grow.

The idea to have the nofollow tag removed from WordPress code has been brought up in the WordPress Ideas page. While I don’t think the nofollow tag should be removed completely out of WordPress code, I hope it becomes a configurable option. The default option should of course to have links marked as nofollow, but bloggers should be able to remove the nofollow tag if they wish. This is already possible with a WordPress plugin, but it makes sense to be a part of the core code.

Ideas posted on the WordPress Ideas page are submitted and voted on by the WordPress community. The idea to have the nofollow tag removed currently has 22 votes, with an average rating of 4 out of 5 stars so it is a possibility that someday this idea is incorporated into WordPress.

What do you think? Should the nofollow tag be removed from WordPress?
