Yesterday marked the deadline for wireless companies in Canada to offer Wireless Number Portability (WNP) throughout most of the country. Telus, Rogers and Bell customers in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec can now switch to another wireless service provider and keep their existing phone numbers.

As a result, the wireless carriers are launching new campaigns to lure in new customers to their service, who may not have switched because they wanted to keep their phone number. We can all expect some better plans now that retention will be a huge thing in the wireless marketplace. Telus seems to be the first company with an aggressive marketing push for new customers. Their google ads, text and video, can be seen on many websites across Canada.

I don’t think I’ll be switching any time soon as I am happy with my Fido service. My parents will most likely switch away from Telus since they don’t have any reception in their new house. I will probably refer them to Fido so I get the $25 referral fee twice and they’ll each get a $25 credit. (At least I think that referral program is still in place).

For most of the day yesterday, Telus had taken over all the Google ads running on Beyond, a local car forum, but the takeover seemed to have stopped this evening. A quick look at the reports reveals that the CPM went up by about $1 for the ad location but I am not sure if its directly related to the Telus Google ads. I will have to continue monitoring it to see if other factors are causing the increase. I noticed Telus ads were plastered all over John’s blog all day yesterday, but right now they’re not there either (ads set to run at certain times? or one day blitz… hmm).

*Update: The Telus ads are back :)
