Its not news to many that utilizing social media websites as a means of online promotion and SEO is important. Social Media Optimization, or SMO is a phrase that was coined to basically mean SEO for Social Media websites such as FaceBook, and in this example LinkedIn. According to LinkedIn there are over 13 Million members on the system, and each member knows on average about 15 to 20 people who are already on LinkedIn. One of the most common mistakes made when building links is overlooking link building opportunities. Today, I will discuss how you can utilize LinkedIn to help promote your blog.

In your LinkedIn profile, you can add up to three websites and categorize them into one of six groups. In this quick tutorial to leverage LinkedIn to promote your blog (or other website), we will actually not be using one of the main groups that are predefined because its not optimal. The O in SEO/SMO does stand for optimization right? Instead, we will use the dropdown and select the group called “other”. This allows you to name the group anything you want, and that means we can add much more descriptive text to use as our anchor text instead of “My Blog” or “My Website”. See the following image as an example:

On the profile page itself, this is how the links will look. As you can see, the website that was added under the “Other” category looks a lot better with a descriptive anchor tag. While some may argue that no link juice is passed because it is not linking directly to the website, it is still a better practice to link to your websites with descriptive text instead of generic terms like “My Website”. This is quite similar to

Of course, all of this will accomplish nothing if your profile page gets no traffic as is the case for mine. Find out which of your friends or colleagues are on LinkedIn and have them connect with your profile, or recommend you. LinkedIn also provides tools to help promote your profile including a button you can add onto your blog or website. As more traffic hits your profile, hopefully some of them visit the links you have setup. We can also hope that search engines will follow the links and utilize the anchor text optimization. Remember everyone, social media optimization is just as important (if not more today) than search engine optimization.
