The development team for WordPress has been hard at work since the release of WordPress 2.1.3. I just wanted to share with everyone some of the new features that will arrive with the release of WordPress 2.2:

Improved Comment Editing - Great for those of you who don’t want to deal with negative blog comments!

Atom 1.0 support for feeds - In addition to supporting RSS feeds, WordPress will now have support for Atom in both posts and comment feeds. More choices for syndication is always a good thing, and if you’re like me and don’t fully understand the difference of Atom vs. RSS, read the wikipedia entry on the differences between the two.

Plugin Sandbox - A test area for bloggers to test out new plugins before deploying them on the blog. Some bloggers like myself actually have a development blog to test out code before applying it to the live blog–with this new feature, there is one less reason to have a test environment.

Widgets for Default and Classic WordPress Themes - One step closer to having widget support built into WordPress. The two bundled themes will now have support for widgets. I use a WordPress plugin to enable widget supports, it would be great if this was built into WordPress at some point.

Post Tagging - Providing a feature that users of the Ultimate Tag Warrior WordPress plugin already enjoy, the tagging feature will allow bloggers to tag each of their posts. An import feature will be available for users of the UTW plugin.

The release date of WordPress 2.2 is still to be determined, it was originally scheduled for April 23, 2007 but it has been delayed. Of course, as soon as I do get an update on when we should expect to upgrade our blogs again, I’ll post about it. If you would like to find out as soon as possible, consider adding my news feed into your Google reader. Alternatively, if you use another another reader you can click on the orange RSS logo on the top right of my page or visit my news feeds page.
