It is a well known fact that the search engines are always updating and improving their algorithms to bring searchers the best, most relevant results. Google even wants everybody to report sites that are trying to manipulate the search results. Avoid these common mistakes and execute an effective link building campaign.

Purchasing Site Wide Links
If you’re going to buy text links for SEO, don’t purchase “run of site” text links. If you purchase these type of links on very large websites, you’ll suddenly receive thousand of links with the same anchor text all pointing to the same URL. Instead, purchase a single text link on each website, and try to vary the anchor text you are using so it is more difficult to detect common purchased/sponsored link patterns.

Building Links Too Rapidly
While you may be eager to build up as many backlinks to your site or blog as fast as possible, this too may trigger detection mechanisms in place at the search engines of potential search engine manipulation. Avoid the temptation to buy 20 PR7 links to your blog in one day, or exchanging links with dozens of bloggers all in a day. Take your time and build up your links slowly and more naturally.

Focusing On Too Few Keywords
When bloggers link to other blogs, they often use different anchor text. When building links, you should attempt to mimic this natural linking pattern to keep the ahead of the game. If the search engines cannot determine with 100% confidence that links to your blog are paid, they will be treated as an “earned” link which will carry more link weight. If you do it properly and the search engines adjust their algorithms, your site should not lose any ranking.

Begging For Links on Public Websites
Don’t spam other blogs and websites (even if they are related) and beg for links. Not only are you creating a “paper trail” of sorts to prove you are trying to manipulate the search rankings, but the only links you are going to get will be worthless.

Overlooking Opportunities
Most blogging software such as WordPress tell the search engines to not follow any links via the nofollow tag. However, many blogs have disabled this feature and the search engines DO follow links. This means that by writing a comment on these blogs, or simply linking to posts will result in links back towards your blog. This blog is link love enabled, so if you liked this post, leave a comment and you’ll get a link back to your site!
