It has been reported that Sony has quietly increased the price of their PS3 console to $699. Canadian PS3 fanboys have been enjoying nice discount because of the currency difference. I can’t remember the last time prices have been adjusted to compensate for currency differences, but perhaps this is implemented to curb the exports of PS3 units from Canada. Either way, at $700 there is only going to be more PS3 sitting on store shelves and even more demand for the already hard to find Nintendo Wii.
Update:Sony has responded by saying there is no official price increase for the PS3. It seems as though it is the retailers that are raising the prices (namely Best Buy and Future Shop).

Future Shop and Best Buy have not raised the price.
Sony has raised the price. These stores are selling the system $15 below cost. The 20 gig is no longer carried at these stores, because of Sony not Best Buy.
