For those of you who read my blog regularly, you’ll know that I’ve been testing AuctionAds on my car forums for just over two months now. AuctionAds is the sixth revenue stream that I have introduced onto the forums. Previously, I had Google Adsense, IntelliTXT, Marketplace Featured Listings, Club Merchandise Sales, and Direct Ad Sales.

AuctionAds is a CPA based ad network. What this means is that I do not get paid for individual clicks on the AuctionAds, but instead users who click must complete some pre-defined action first. In this case, the action could be placing a winning bid, completing a buy-it-now sale, or completing the new user registration process on eBay. Because of this, I knew from the very beginning that introducing AuctionAds on my forums would involve a lengthy testing and evaluation process. After a click occurs on one of the banners, the user that clicked is tagged via a cookie for 30 days. If one of the pre-defined actions are completed in this 30 day window, I will earn some revenue.

It is very tempting to give up too early on new revenue streams because the “Money Earned This Week” report keeps showing you the dreaded $0.00. The following is a chart of the progress of this new revenue stream for me, by month. I started this program on March 6th.

March 2007 - $0.19 eCPM
April 2007 - $0.78 eCPM
May 2007 - $6.05 eCPM

What this chart is telling me is that in March, for every 1000 impressions of the AuctionAds banner, I am made approximately 19 cents. This is terrible, even for forums which have very high pageviews per user compared to say blogs, and other websites. In April, the results improved, and my eCPM jumped to $0.78. Now, month-to-date for May my eCPM is at $6.05! By the 3rd day of May, I already made as much as I did in the whole month of April. Amazing!

As the AuctionAd network grows, my earning potential increases as well because we all work as a collective whole to take advantage of the higher paying tiers on eBays affiliate program. As we all sign-up more and more new eBay users, we can move up from earning $12 per registration to $22 per registration. Same thing goes with the revenue share. When the network was smaller, we started at the lowest revenue share tier which pays out 40% of revenue. At the top tier, the revenue payout is 65%.

Because there are literally millions of products sold on eBay, there is bound to be something related to your website. Sign up for AuctionAds and give it a try. Remember, this is not a CPC based network so it may take awhile before the earnings begin to grow. Good luck!
