Many blog authors take advantage of researching additional keywords to optimize for when trying to optimize their blogs for search engines. A common trick to get more traffic is to optimize for slight variants of the main keyword you are after. This is known as the long tail of keywords. In order to take full advantage of this search query tail you must have lots of compelling content on your site all indexed in the search engines. To illustrate what exactly this long tail is, imagine the top 1000 movies by box office sales. The top 25 movies may be huge blockbuster hits with hundreds of millions in box office sales but if you add up all the bottom tier movies their box office sales will not only add up to the top movies, but it will often surpass the top movies.

Now, lets get back to the search engine world. The top keywords may yield a ton of traffic but theres tons of competition when it comes to ranking high enough to take advantage of this traffic. So why not go after the keywords that nobody else is focusing on right? And that is exactly what many search engine optimisation friendly websites do. Oh, oops, spelled that wrong. :)

Bad Spellign Ain’t So Bad After All!
It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in but there are many opportunities to spell words wrong. If you’ve ever made a typo (and who hasn’t?) then you’ll know how easy it is to spell a word wrong, especially when typing fast into a search box. Here is an example on Google where you can see many bloggers and websites spelling .htaccess wrong. I wonder how much traffic one gets ranked #2 and #3 for “search engine optimisation“.

So the next time you make a spelling mistake in your blog post, perhaps you should keep it spelled wrong. Its important to write content for your readership and not a search engine robot, so you’ll have to make sure you aren’t spelling every 3rd word wrong just to capitalize on all the extra typo traffic. Don’t sacrifice your professionalism just to get some more traffic!
