Intel Shows off 80 Core Processor
technology February 11th, 2007Did you just build a fancy new server with a brand new quad core processor? Well, that system is going to seem a little slow compared to the 80 core CPU that Intel just showed off. No, that is not a typo, its not 8 cores, it is really 80 cores! Of course, the processor will not be produced in quantity as it was for research purposes but still that is amazing that they even have something like that out already. I think this quote pretty much sums up how much we have progressed in the computing industry:
The chip is capable of producing 1 trillion floating-point operations per second, known as a teraflop. That’s a level of performance that required 2,500 square feet of large computers a decade ago.
All 80 cores were running at 3.16 Ghz… some serious computing power. Just imagine, someday, this CPU will be a minimum requirement to run the latest version of Windows from Microsoft! :)

Well, that is amazing :) But when the day comes when such processors will be the requirement for running Windows, noone will be running Windows. By that time everyone will use Mac or Linux :)
