It was one year ago that Google first introduced click-to-play video ads. At the launch of the video ads, the available formats were 336×280 (large rectangle), 300×250 (medium rectangle), 250×250 (square), and 200×200 (small square).

Google has released three new video ad formats: 728×90 (leaderboard), 120×600 (skyscraper) and 160×600 (wide skyscraper). The new video formats are interesting because only a portion of the ad is overlayed with video. This is because the new ad sizes are not traditional video aspect ratios.

I have not seen any video ads appear on my leaderboard ad location yet. I’m not entirely sure how popular these new video ad formats will be as the videos are quite small. You can see an example of it on the AdSense blog.
