While deciding on who to choose to host my blog, I had too many choices. It can be quite overwhelming to choose from the hundreds of web hosts available on the internet. I also had the option of hosting it myself as we do have our own mini datacenter for hosting a local car forum that I helped found, and run on a daily basis. I decided against this as we run on a WIMP (Windows/IIS/MySQL, PHP) setup. While WordPress has run successfully on a WIMP setup, I did not have any experience in doing so and was therefore not comfortable hosting everything myself.

If I ever outgrow my current web host, I can always move it back in-house. So who did I choose to host my blog? I had read about several blogs that have had success with BlueFur (formerly known as Monster Hosting). They recently changed their name to BlueFur due allegations of trademark infringment. Rather than fight the lawsuit, they decided to change names and save loads of $ so they can stay competitive in the low cost web host market. As they are just completing the changeover to the new name, they are running a contest where you can get a free domain name by reviewing their new name.

BlueFur is an excellent name as I feel it is a very brandable name. It rolls off the tonque and it is easy to remember which is extremely important if you want visitors to return after seeing your product/service offerings. If you take a look at their logo, its not hard to figure out how they came up with the new domain name. I am sure they did not need to spend much time in the boardroom brainstorming new domain names!

The only downside to their new name is possible typos. I’m not sure if I’m alone but I kept typing in bluefir.com into my browser when I tried to goto their website. Aside from this, I love the new name and look forward to the rest of the year with my new blog. So, enough about their new name, let me tell you a little bit about what they have to offer and why I chose them.

BlueFur offered a basic hosting package they call “mini-unix”. This plan is very cheap at $4.95US. If choosing the one year plan, you save 15% off the total price and because I used a discount code to sign-up, I saved another 15% off the yearly price. Whats the discount code? Well, you’re going to have to head over to John’s blog over at JohnChow.com.

The mini-unix plan I went with provides me with 500MB of storage, and 50GB of monthly transfers. I don’t think I’ll be hitting either of these limits for quite some time. The whole process from signing up, to paying and then finally getting my account information took just a single day. This was faster than it took for my domain name to point to the BlueFur name servers. If you run a busier website or blog, you may want to go through their Web Hosting Wizard to find the right hosting package for your needs.
