If you tuned into this years Grammy awards, you will have realized that their defiant comeback is complete. In 2003, during a London tour, lead singer Natalie Maine publicly bashed US President George W. Bush by saying “”Just so you know, we’re ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas”. The anti-war comment caused a huge public relations nightmare for the Dixie Chicks. Many radio stations
stopped playing their music, and fans even gathered together in a “Dixie Bash” where thousands of CDs were destroyed. Maine even received death threats for her comment.
The Dixie Chicks cleaned up by picking up all 5 awards they were nominated for including Album of The Year. I honestly feel that all the idiots that boycotted the Dixie Chicks now realize that they were right all along in opposing Bush. The standing ovation they received was further confirmation that America has smartened up and are no longer all mindless idiots blindly supporting their less than stellar leader.
Maine in her awards acceptance speech said, “I think people are using their freedom of speech with all these awards. We get the message.”. Oh, yes, don’t worry, America realizes they screwed up Natalie, and even if they didn’t Bush can’t run again anyway.

I don’t have a link unfortunately but, that outrage was manufactured, at least the bulldozing bit.

Considering that the Grammys are voted on by only members in THE RECORDING AND MUSIC industry, I don’t see how you can say that “Americans realize the Chicks were right”…. One only needs to look at all the cancelled tour stops and declining ticket sales to realize that most Americans (not the voting NARAS members) are sick of the chicks and their “holier than thou attitude”…. Americans were not offended by Maines’ comments about Bush as much as they were by this loud mouth acting as if she was a mouthpiece for the rest of us…Shut up and sing Dixies - we could care less about your opinions! Unfortunately, the Chicks have an obnoxious “chip-on-her shoulder” pudgeball as their social commentator - that’s what drives their concert attendance into the hole!

Actually C.Smith, it just shows that the fanbase that had originally guided/helped the Dixie Chicks into fame was evaporating due to their poor judgement in a president. (The South, and Midwest mainly carried Bush in both 00, and 04. These are the traditional roots of Country Music.)
If you take notice, their CD sales are through the roof. The traditional venues for a Country Rocker/Musician differ than those of an Alternative/Rockn’Roll/Hip Hop/etc route. Mainly because the music appeals to different crowds.
Everyone is allowed opinions, it’s a great thing about free speach, if someone has the ability to say something on a large scale and they feel strong enough about it they should.
Musicians/Actors may not be experts on what is going on, but most who speak out have done enough research to at least have a well formed opinion… More so than most of the people who re-act to an opinion rather than having one of their own.

it does not matter if one agrees with them or not. They have a right to express thier opinions. So if expressing ones dissenting opinion is a problem then maybe a facist world would accomidate you better. I hear china works like that. People are jailed for 25 years for having dissenting opinions. You moron’s who think that maines should keep her mouth shut should maybe read the bill of rights to get your facts right. As for the war and dildo bush, supposedly they are fighting to protect that freedom of speech the Dixie’s are using. They are not the only one’s who disagree with our forgien policy, there are allot of us out there. I would hate to actually hear your opinion but you do have a right to it, but no one has the right to take anothers speech away - much less supress it - try as they might - In this world their are many other ways to get ideas out there. You should be thankful that people are willing to take tongue lashings form people like you to get their ideas out there. I may not agree with her opinion but i do believe that she has a right to say it and if she chooses to use the platforms that are available to her then more power to her.

Declining ticket sales are temporary, the Dixie Chicks are now distancing themselves from “country music” and their fans (many of whom apparently are pro-bush) and moving more towards the rock genre.
The Dixie Chicks have exercised their right to free speech, and their old fans have exercised their right to not support them. This is what freedom is all about!
PS: I’m not even a Dixie Chicks fan, I’m just a fan of the Grammys for their political stance :)

Great title of your post! It was great to see the Dixie Chicks get rewarded for risking their entire career and putting together an incredible album at the same time!

I might not have agreed w/ the Dixie Chicks and I know lots of people are strongly against the president, and that’s fine, that’s what I love about America. But what pissed me off about their action was that it felt like they were selling out their country by doing it overseas. Then they went on and on about no free speech. It’s not that there isn’t free speech but rather that people didn’t like what they were speaking about.
I agree w/ C.Smith up above that those awards are not a popular contest and do not actually represent the American opinion regarding the Dixie Chicks.
Good discussion. I enjoy hearing both sides of this.

There is free speech, only inside American borders where it can be silenced if necessary :) j/k

Looks like the Dixie Chick were smarter than most of the Country. Especially the South….everything is a little slower in the South. Best CD ever!!! Best Concert ever!!! Rock on Dixie Chicks….forget about Country Radio…I HAVE.

Let the Dixie Chicks say whatever they want, but let people say whatever they want right back to them. They get their panties all in a wad because radio stations pulled their music - isn’t that free speech too? If all the rednecks don’t want them on the radio (and call the stations to tell them so) then what is the big deal?
Oh, poor us - everyone got mad at us..boo hoo. And what is all this free speech talk - who ever suggested they weren’t allowed to say what they wanted? nobody.
